The original title of this painting was called Spirits of the West, this painting initially was commissioned for a art show of illustrations. Mr. Thomas Blackshear II was chosen as an artist to do a painting that resembles the west. This painting incorporates all the elements of the west in a form of art. The name was changed to Indian Paint Brush when Mr. Blackshear discovered that there was a flower in the west named Indian Paint Brush.
